If you have started researching safe outdoor access for your cat, you have probably encountered both terms: balcony catio and cat window balcony. They are often used interchangeably, and sometimes confused entirely. They are actually two distinct product categories, each suited to a different living situation — and choosing the wrong one means buying something that does not fit your home or does not solve your problem.
A balcony catio is an enclosure that occupies the balcony itself — either a cage-style frame with mesh panels that sits on the balcony floor, or a net system that encloses the balcony perimeter. The cat walks out through the door into the enclosed space and has floor area, vertical space, and outdoor exposure within the enclosure. Balcony catios range from DIY builds to commercial modular systems like the Omlet Outdoor Cat Run. They are the right product when you have a balcony with meaningful floor space and a setup that allows the enclosure to attach securely.
A cat window balcony — also called a window cat enclosure or window catio — is a steel enclosure that mounts directly to the window frame and extends outside, giving your cat a secure open-air space to sit in without requiring any balcony floor space at all. The cat accesses it by going through the open window. The enclosure hangs outside the window, enclosed on all sides including the top. The window can still open and close normally when not in use.
A window balcony does not require a balcony at all. It works on any window that opens — including on floors where there is no balcony, or in flats where the balcony cannot be safely enclosed. The BalconyCat window enclosure is built from galvanised steel with a powder-coated finish, custom-made to each customer’s window measurements, and attaches using steel corner brackets that require no drilling.

Balcony catio: the cat goes out through the door onto the balcony, into the enclosed space. The balcony is the outdoor environment. Window balcony: the cat goes out through the window, into the enclosure that hangs outside the window. The balcony is not involved. If you have a balcony and it can be enclosed, both options may be relevant. If you do not have a balcony, or your balcony cannot be enclosed — a window balcony is the answer. It is the only solution that does not require balcony access.
Requires balcony floor space — at minimum around 1m×1m for a single cat to have any sense of space, ideally larger. A very small balcony, a Juliet balcony, or a narrow terrace cannot accommodate a catio in any useful sense. A full balcony enclosure also needs something to anchor to: a ceiling or overhead structure, a solid railing, or a flat floor surface large enough to support a freestanding structure.
Requires only a window. The footprint is determined by the window width and depth of the enclosure (typically 40–60cm). It does not need floor space. This makes window balconies particularly practical for flats with no balcony, Juliet balconies, small balconies where space is too limited for a functional catio, and upper floors where the balcony structure is not suitable for external attachment.
Installation varies enormously by product type. DIY builds may require drilling into the balcony wall or floor. Commercial modular systems typically use floor-contact, railing-clip, or strap-based attachment that avoids drilling but may still leave marks or require landlord awareness. Net systems often need anchor points at multiple locations. Removal is usually possible, but there may be residual anchor holes or wear marks on the railing or wall.
The BalconyCat window enclosure attaches using steel corner brackets that grip around the existing window frame. No drilling. No wall penetration. No marks. It can be fully removed and reinstalled — including at a different property if you move. This is the defining practical advantage for renters: it meets the standard most tenancy agreements implicitly require, with no permanent modification to the property.
Balcony catio: the price range is wide. A DIY build can cost €100–€300 in materials. A commercial modular system configured for a medium balcony typically runs €300–€600. A fully custom-built balcony enclosure from a specialist supplier will cost considerably more — €1,000 and upward. Budget options exist, but lower cost usually means lighter materials, shorter lifespan, and less rigorous load-testing.
Window balcony: the BalconyCat starts from €899. This is a custom-made, galvanised and powder-coated steel product, built to your specific window measurements, load-tested to 40 kg, with hardware kit, video guides, and direct support included. The comparison to a DIY balcony catio at €200 is not like-for-like — different materials, load capacity, and lifespan. At the level of a properly specified enclosure, the prices are closer than they first appear.

Both product types, when properly built and installed, achieve the same core outcome: your cat cannot fall, cannot escape, and has genuine freedom within the enclosed space. The specific things to verify on any enclosure, regardless of type:
Mesh size: 5x5cm for adult cats, 2.5x2.5cm for kittens. Use welded mesh only — woven or chicken-wire mesh is not appropriate. Frame rigidity: the frame should not flex under lateral load. If it moves when you push it, it is not secure enough. Attachment quality: the points where the enclosure connects to the building are the failure-risk points — test them after installation and apply real force. Load rating: any credible enclosure should state a load rating. The BalconyCat enclosure is rated to 40 kg and tested at 70+ kg of dynamic human weight.
You have a balcony with at least 1.5–2m² of usable floor space. The balcony structure allows secure attachment. You want to give your cat full freedom to roam and move across a larger outdoor space. You own the property or have landlord agreement for modifications. Budget flexibility allows for a properly specified build.
You do not have a balcony, or your balcony is too small to be useful as a catio. You have a Juliet balcony or French door with no platform. You are renting and cannot drill or make permanent modifications. You want the cleanest, simplest installation with the least structural dependency. You want something custom-built precisely to your window, load-tested, and ready to last without ongoing maintenance.
